What We Look At
Depending on the category and type of product, we consider factors such as:
Services & Features
We examine the features and services included with a product and consider how useful they may be to the intended consumer.
Depending on the category, this may include antivirus protection, identity monitoring, credit monitoring, VPN functionality, password management, scam protection, data-breach monitoring, restoration assistance, backup and other relevant features.
Protection & Coverage
We consider the scope of protection offered and what types of devices, accounts, information or online activities the service is designed to cover.
We also look at important limitations, exclusions, plan-specific differences and other conditions where relevant.
Plan Flexibility
We consider the different plans available, including differences in features, device limits, coverage options and subscription structures.
A product with more plans is not automatically considered better. We look at whether the available options provide useful choices for different types of consumers.
Value
We consider the relationship between the product’s features, coverage and pricing.
Our assessment isn’t based simply on which product has the lowest price. A more expensive service may provide greater value for a consumer who actually needs its additional features, while a less expensive option may be more appropriate for someone with simpler requirements.
Transparency
We look at how clearly a provider communicates important information such as pricing, features, limitations, renewal terms and other relevant conditions.
We believe consumers should be able to understand what they are purchasing before making a decision.
User Experience
Where appropriate, we consider factors such as ease of use, setup, navigation, accessibility of features and the overall experience of using the service.
The importance of each factor can vary depending on the product category.
How Our Ratings Work
ProtectionSeek may assign products an overall ProtectionSeek Rating, such as 8.7/10.
The rating is an editorial assessment created by ProtectionSeek. It is not a score provided by the product company, and it should not be interpreted as a laboratory security-testing result or a guarantee of performance.

An antivirus product may require a greater focus on threat protection, device coverage and security features, while a VPN may require greater emphasis on privacy, performance and VPN-specific functionality.
We therefore don’t use exactly the same criteria or weighting for every category simply for the sake of consistency. Our goal is to evaluate products according to the factors that are most relevant to the type of service being reviewed.
How We Compare Products
When comparing products, we look at the information available for each service and try to compare similar features and plans on a like-for-like basis.
For example, comparing two antivirus products may involve looking at malware protection, web protection, device coverage, included privacy tools and plan flexibility.
Similarly, comparing identity-protection services may involve looking at identity monitoring, credit monitoring, financial monitoring, restoration assistance and coverage limitations.
A product may perform better in one area while another may be stronger in a different area. Our comparisons therefore may identify different products as better suited for different types of users rather than declaring one universal winner.
Where We Get Our Information
We primarily research information from sources such as:
- Official provider websites
- Current product and plan information
- Provider documentation and support resources
- Product terms and conditions
- Publicly available company information
- Independent sources and testing where relevant
Because product features and pricing can change, we aim to review and update information periodically.
However, we cannot guarantee that every piece of information will always reflect the provider’s most recent changes. The provider’s website and applicable terms should be considered the final source for current pricing, availability, features and conditions.
Pricing and Promotions
Prices and promotional offers can change frequently.
When we display pricing, we try to identify whether the information represents:
- Monthly pricing
- Annual pricing
- Promotional or introductory pricing
- Renewal pricing
- Plan-specific pricing
Where appropriate, we encourage readers to verify the current price and renewal terms directly with the provider before purchasing.
A lower advertised price does not automatically result in a higher ProtectionSeek rating.
Our Affiliate Relationships
Some products featured on ProtectionSeek may be available through affiliate programs.

Do Providers Pay for Better Ratings?
Our ratings are not sold to providers.
We do not intend for a provider’s participation in an affiliate program to guarantee a particular rating, ranking or editorial conclusion.
We may feature products from providers with whom we have an affiliate relationship, as well as products for which we do not currently receive affiliate compensation.
Our purpose is to provide useful comparison information rather than simply promote the product that generates the highest commission.
Are Our Reviews Independent?
ProtectionSeek is an independent comparison and information website operated by FTM Financial Services LLC.
Our reviews are editorial assessments based on the information and criteria we consider relevant to each product category.
However, “independent” does not mean that our reviews represent laboratory testing or personal use of every product we cover. Where we have not personally tested a product or feature, we do not intend to represent that we have done so.
Information supplied or published by a provider may be used as part of our research, but provider claims are not automatically treated as an independent endorsement or verification by ProtectionSeek.
What Our Ratings Do Not Mean
A high ProtectionSeek rating does not mean that a product is suitable for everyone.
Our ratings do not guarantee:

- That an antivirus product will detect every threat
- That a VPN will provide complete online anonymity
- That a password manager is immune to every security risk

Keeping Our Reviews Up to Date
Digital security products change regularly.
